What do Illinois judges and
legislators have in common? Gold-plated retirements. A recent analysis by Jake
Griffin at the Daily Herald shows that nearly 40 percent of the state’s 789
retired judges make more money in retirement than when they sat on the bench. The
average annual judicial pension in 2015 was $132,426, according to the analysis.
Most Illinois government employees must work 40 years to achieve the maximum pension,
pegged at 75% of best salary. Not so for judges, who top out at 85% in 20
years.
