Uber is a trendy company that capitalizes on technology, work-life balance, and competition. In Johannesburg, Uber is taking work and livelihoods from metered cab drivers who suffered under apartheid. Cabbies lost 2 million rides to Uber from January to June 2015. Meanwhile, Uber has a market cap of $41 billion, and is comfortably situated in the Bay area. Money that circulated in Johannesburg is now exported to California.
