Couch Food for Thought: Who Is Your State's Biggest Employer?
The Wall Street Journal has a list of the
largest employers in each state. By my rough count, Wal-Mart leads the way: it
is the largest employer in 20 states. The second largest employer—really, a category
of employers— are state university health care systems. Picture massive
research/medical complexes that are housed in universities. These employers
lead the way in 15 states. The next largest are private health care providers,
roughly 6 or 7. Question: Is there a subtle connection between a lifestyle
centered around Wal-Mart and the insatiable demand for health services? Seems like
a stretch, but it’s couch-food for thought. See here.
