What does it mean to be a “true American”? Pew Research
Foundation asked that question in the U.S. and other nations.
In the U.S., 32% of survey respondents said that being born
in the U.S. is the essence of being a “true American.”
Being a Christian is
also a core element of being a “true American” according to 32% of respondents.
Sharing traditions and customs is what makes someone a “true
American,” according to 45% of respondents.
Donald Trump’s support as a candidate and as president has
essentially ranged from 38% to 46% over the past year. That range seems to
reflect the 32% who perceive American identity in terms of birth in the U.S.
and being a Christian.
